Most heat loss in a home happens where you can’t see it: inside walls, above ceilings, and around the edges of the foundation. A thermal audit makes it visible. Here’s how it works.
Step 1: The blower-door test
We mount a calibrated fan in an exterior doorway and lower the air pressure inside the house. Outside air is drawn in through every gap, which lets us measure how leaky the house is overall and feel where the air is coming in.
Step 2: The infrared walkthrough
An infrared camera shows surface temperature differences. While the house is under the blower door, leaks and insulation gaps stand out. Cold streaks and patches often point to missing or settled insulation, air leaks and thermal bridges.
Infrared works best when there is a clear temperature difference between inside and outside, which is why fall and winter are good times for an audit. The camera shows surface temperatures, so a trained auditor still has to interpret what it shows.
What we commonly find
- Gaps and bypasses at the attic floor, around chimneys, plumbing and wiring
- Uninsulated or settled insulation in knee walls and wall cavities
- Leaks around recessed lights and attic hatches
- Rim joists and basement or crawl space edges that let air in low in the house
What you get
A room-by-room report ranked by cost-to-fix, so the work is aimed at the leaks that matter most instead of a guess by the square foot. Our full report arrives within 48 hours. [CONFIRM]
Do I need to prepare?
Not much. It helps if we can reach your attic hatch, basement and any crawl space.
